The Princess Anne Country Club has been the place for exclusive recreation in Virginia Beach for over a hundred years. With fine dining, acres of pristine golf courses, and quick access to the world’s longest pleasure beach, the Country Club is the ideal place for its members to relax during the hot summer months.
However, once you become a member, you always remain a member, even after death. Local rumors dictate that this resort has a few skeletons in its closets. With access only for those who pay, who is truly to say what is real and what is a legend?
Let’s put on our gloves and tee off to discover the secrets of one of the most haunted places in Virginia. Make sure to book a Virginia Beach Ghost Tour with Neptune Ghosts to learn more haunted history!
Why is the Princess Anne Country Club Haunted?
Virginia Beach, and for that matter, the Princess Anne Country Club, has little history when it comes to major violence. So, it must be that the spirits remaining at the Princess Anne Country Club have a deep connection with it. Perhaps some have died there as well and have kept their strong bond even in death.
So, what is it that makes the Country Club so special?
History of Princess Anne County
Princess Anne County was founded in 1691 by British Colonists and named after the daughter of the then-English King, James II. The city of Virginia Beach was formed in 1906 and quickly grew after World War II with military installations and rapid population growth.
In 1963, fearing that the city of Norfolk would annex Princess Anne to expand its area, the county and Virginia Beach merged to create the Virginia Beach that’s known today. Cities could annex land from other counties, but they could not annex land from another city, hence the merger.
Technically, the county no longer exists. It hasn’t been on any map since 1963. However, its name can be found on several prominent structures in the area, like the Princess Anne Courthouse, the Princess Anne High School, and especially the Princess Anne Country Club.
The Country Club
The Princess Anne Country Club was founded back in 1916 as a way for businessmen living in Norfolk to relax outside of the city. The renowned golf course was opened in 1921.
The original clubhouse had been a staple of the country club since its founding, but by the 21st century, it was becoming apparent that it lacked modern-day efficiency. Many members were leery of letting the old clubhouse go.
The administration solved this issue by building the new clubhouse directly behind the old one. This way, the clubhouse and club could remain operational during the construction of the new one. Members could also hold on to its nostalgic value for a little while longer.
The building was finished in 2005, and many members enjoy it as their clubhouse to this day. But perhaps they aren’t the only ones enjoying the country club.
The Hauntings of the Princess Anne Country Club.
Because the country club is only open to members, its hauntings are not as well documented as those of the other haunted places in Virginia. However, that hasn’t stopped stories and rumors from circulating throughout the years.
There are rumors that the spirit of a bride is believed to roam the bar area of the club. Sometimes, people think they have heard the sounds of a 1920s jazz band playing whenever she’s near.
There’s also rumored to be a group of rather disgruntled spirits who have been known to chase people out of the club. One of those spirits is known to wear a cape and be particularly mean.
Even when the new clubhouse was being constructed, strange things were happening. Some of the crew swore they heard what sounded like dinner wear being set when there was no possible way for dinner wear to be anywhere on the premises.
The Princess Anne Country Club is not the only haunted place you can find in Virginia Beach. Just a few minutes down the road stands the Cavalier Hotel, and many believe it to be more haunted than any other place in the city.
The Haunted Cavalier Hotel.
Constructed in 1927, this lavish resort has been entertaining guests and providing a welcomed rest for almost as long as the country club. People like Bing Crosby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and even several presidents have booked a stay here.
Now, the most famous residents of this hotel are the spirits that remain within.
The hotel used to close its doors to guests during the winter months, which is nothing out of the ordinary for a hotel to do. However, what was out of the ordinary was when the reception desk received phone calls from empty rooms on the sixth floor.
What was heard on the other line? Static and the faint sound of jazz music.
That’s not the only weird thing to happen on the sixth floor.
In 1929, the founder of Coors Brewing Company, Adolph Coors, checked into the hotel one night. Soon after checking in, his body was found on the grounds of the hotel. Some believed he jumped to his death. Others think he was pushed off, or perhaps he fell by accident.
Ever since, guests who’ve stayed in his room have reported hearing odd shuffling noises, strange whispers, and even the window opening on its own.
Perhaps the most bizarre apparition seen throughout the hotel is that of a cat. Legend has it that a little girl brought her cat to the hotel, but the cat managed to get out of their room and into the swimming pool, where it drowned.
Seeing the kitty, the girl jumped in to try and save it, only to end up drowning herself.
Now, people have sworn they’ve heard the faint sounds of meowing and odd scratching throughout the hotel. Some have even believed they’ve seen pawprints on the stairwell.
